Kara Helget is currently a School Nutrition Intern working for the School District of the Menomonie Area (SDMA).   In the Fall, Kara will be a graduate student attending University of Wisconsin-Stout working towards a masters degree in Human Nutritional Sciences.  She attained her Bachelor of Science degree in  Health Promotion: Community Health at Winona State University (WSU) while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

Kara is passionate about sharing her knowledge of health and nutrition.  She enjoys using her communication, creativity, planning, and organizational skills to influence others to live a healthier lifestyle.  Her dream is to play a leading role in the fight against childhood obesity in America.

Already Kara has helped lead the expansion of an innovative school lunch program called Tasty Tuesdays to all the public elementary schools in the Winona area.  Tasty Tuesdays exposes students to a new vegetable each month and gets them excited about eating healthy meals with various Tasty Tuesday mascots, such as Truman the Tomato (see photograph here).

Kara also has experience of leading a team that designed, implemented, and evaluated an employee wellness program for the City of Winona.  Additionally, as the president of WSU's F.A.N. (Food and Nutrition) Club, she has secured the local sponsorships for campus wide club events promoting nutrition, organized and lead club meetings, and lead a team of executive committee members.

During her time working as an intern, Kara researched and designed a Harvest of the Month (HOM) program in collaboration with SDMA's Food Service Director, Judi Smith. As part of the HOM program she developed, Kara created graphically appealing and educational posters, flyers, and booklets. She is very excited about the future of Farm to School and the positive impact it will have on the health of America's youth.
